The self-cleaning cycle has been running for a while, the kitchen is heating up, a slight odor is felt, and the urge to press “stop” becomes strong. But is it really safe to interrupt this cycle along the way?

A self-cleaning oven operates at temperatures well above those of conventional cooking, which explains both its effectiveness and some special precautions that must be respected.

Here's how this cycle works, what really happens if you stop it, and what to do before, during, and after automatic cleaning.

How does a self-cleaning cycle work

Pyrolysis mode brings the oven temperature to about400 to 500°Cfor one to three hours, depending on the model. This extreme heat reduces food residue into fine ash, which is easy to wipe off once the oven has cooled. For safety reasons, the door automatically locks at the start of the cycle and stays locked until the temperature drops sufficiently.

What happens if you turn off the oven during the cycle?

On most ovens, pressing the stop button stops the heating, butDo not unlock the door immediately. The safety lock remains active until the inside temperature falls below a threshold set by the manufacturer, which may take another hour or more. This delay is not a malfunction: it prevents the opening of an oven brought to a heat that is dangerous for the skin and the eyes.

Interrupting the cycle does not usually pose a risk to the device itself, but it does leave the cleaning unfinished: the residues did not have time to be completely calcined, and a new complete cycle will often be required to complete the job.

Smokes and odors: should we be worried?

Light smoke and a particular odour are normal during the first few self-cleaning cycles, especially if significant greasy residues were present. On the other hand, dense smoke or a pungent, pungent odor should encourage you to switch off the appliance and ventilate the room, especially if a smoke detector is triggered. It is recommended to remove large food projections beforehand, precisely to limit this type of inconvenience.

Our tips

►Remove grates and large residues before starting the cycle

The fewer bulky residues there are, the less smoke and odor there is during pyrolysis.

►Ventilate the kitchen during and after the cycle

Opening a window limits the accumulation of odors, which is particularly useful when using the function for the first time.

►Never force open a locked door

The lock protects against potentially dangerous heat; wait for automatic unlocking.

Turning off the oven during pyrolysis is possible without harm to the appliance, but the door remains locked for safety until cooling, and the cleaning will remain incomplete.
