Here's how many quarts are in a gallon, their equivalent in liters, and where the quart fits in that hierarchy.
The official conversion: 4 quarters to 1 gallon
In the United States,1 gallon is exactly equivalent to 4 quarters. It is a fixed relationship, independent of the ingredient measured, that is part of the hierarchy of American volume measures: cup, pint, quarter, gallon.
And in liters, to cook without galonnier
For a useful conversion to French cuisine:1 American quarter is equivalent to approximately 0.946 liters, and 1 gallon is therefore equivalent to approximately 3.785 liters, or just under 4 liters. For a quick calculation, you can round 1 quarter to about 1 liter without much loss of precision.
The useful submultiple: the pint
Between the cup and the quarter is the pint (pint):1 quart equals 2 quarts, and 1 quart is about 0.473 liters. A full gallon therefore represents 8 quarts. These markers are useful for reading recipes for American drinks or preserves.
