How many ounces in a US gallon
An American gallon (US gallon) contains128 fluid ounces (fl oz). This value comes from the hierarchy of American measures: 1 gallon = 4 quarts, 1 quart = 32 ounces, so 4 x 32 = 128 ounces in total.
The equivalent in liters for French cooks
To adapt a recipe without American equipment, the most useful conversion is in liters:1 American gallon is equivalent to approximately 3.785 liters, or just under 4 liters. A liquid ounce, on the other hand, corresponds to about 29.6 ml, which is still close to 30 ml for a quick calculation.
Beware of the British gallon
There is a second unit, the imperial gallon (used in the United Kingdom), which is larger:1 imperial gallon is equivalent to approximately 4.546 liters, or 160 imperial ounces. If an ancient British recipe mentions one gallon, it is therefore not the same quantity as an American recipe.

Half a gallon is equivalent to 64 ounces, or about 1.9 liters, and a quarter of a gallon is equal to 32 ounces, or about 0.95 liters. These fractions are often used in recipes for drinks or marinades prepared in large quantities.
