Can you put a crockpot in the oven?
by Karine Lemoine
One recipe recommends finishing a preparation in the oven, and the crockpot is already on the counter with the dish in it. Is it possible to connect the appliance, or only its bowl, directly into the oven by sliding it?
The answer depends entirely on the part concerned: the complete electrical appliance and the inner tank do not behave at all in the same way when faced with the heat of the oven.

Here's why the entire appliance should never go in the oven, when the tub alone can go in the oven, and how to check what's actually possible with your model.
The complete electrical appliance: never in the oven
A slow cooker is composed of an electrical base containing a resistor, a thermostat and electronic components, on which a removable bowl rests. This baseUnder no circumstances should it be placed in an oven: the electrical components are not designed to withstand such high ambient heat, and this represents a real risk of fire or irreversible damage to the device. The glass lid provided with some models is also not always designed for the oven.
The tank alone: sometimes possible, never automatic
Many crockpots have a removable inner bowl made of ceramic, stoneware, or enamelled cast iron, which, once separated from the electric base, can in some cases go in the oven. But this compatibilitydepends entirely on the model: some tanks are designed to withstand conventional oven temperatures, others are not, especially if they have a decorative finish sensitive to heat or a more fragile design.
The only reliable way to know if your tank is oven-safe is to consult the user manual or the manufacturer's instructions, which are often written under the tub itself.
What do you do in practice to finish cooking in the oven?
If your crock pot is not guaranteed to be oven-compatible, the safest solution is to transfer the mixture to an ovenproof dish before continuing cooking. This avoids any risk of cracks or thermal shock on a container that was not designed for this use, and allows the recipe to be continued without compromising safety.
Our tips
►Never put the electric base in the oven
There are no exceptions to this rule, regardless of the model or brand of the slow cooker.
►Consult the manual before use in the oven
It is the only document that reliably indicates whether the tank alone is compatible and up to what temperature.
►If in doubt, transfer to a suitable dish
A well-known and reliable ovenproof dish avoids any unnecessary risk on a tank whose compatibility is not certain.
The electric base of a slow cooker never goes in the oven, while its inner bowl can sometimes go, depending on the model and only after checking the manual.
